Are You the Problem or the Solution?

Under pressure, leaders must examine not only the team and market, but also the assumptions, habits and choices they personally control.

Business professionals in a meeting around a table

When a business is under pressure, it is natural to look for the cause outside ourselves.

A market shifted. A customer delayed. A team did not execute. A forecast missed.

Those may all be true. They may not be the whole explanation.

Start With What You Control

Before asking what other people should do differently, a leader can ask: Which assumptions did I accept? Which decisions did I postpone? What information did I not request? Did I make priorities clear? Did I listen when someone raised a concern?

These questions are not an invitation to take blame for everything. They are a way to separate what can be controlled from what cannot.

The Numbers Do Not Tell the Whole Story

Financial information can show where an outcome changed. It may not explain every behavior or operating decision behind it.

A leader has to connect the numbers to what people were asked to do, what they understood and what constraints they faced.

That is why diagnosis should include conversation as well as analysis.

Take Responsibility, Then Decide

If a leadership choice contributed to a problem, acknowledging it is not weakness. It makes the next discussion more honest.

Once the issue is understood, the decision becomes more practical: what needs to change, who will take responsibility, and when will we review whether it is working?

The question is not about being perfect. It is about being willing to examine your part before asking the organization to change.

The first useful question may be the one a leader asks of their own decisions.

Key Takeaway

A clear diagnosis includes the leader’s own assumptions and decisions, not only the performance of other people.
